{"id":181,"date":"2019-11-25T15:18:21","date_gmt":"2019-11-25T15:18:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/pro.freezine.org\/remediary0com\/?p=181"},"modified":"2019-11-25T16:15:44","modified_gmt":"2019-11-25T16:15:44","slug":"only-fools-rush-in-to-build-on-top-of-closed-secret-proprietary-platforms","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/pro.freezine.org\/remediary0com\/2019\/11\/25\/only-fools-rush-in-to-build-on-top-of-closed-secret-proprietary-platforms\/","title":{"rendered":"Only Fools Rush in to Build on Top of Closed (Secret, Proprietary) Platforms"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Last week Amnesty International published a report about the online platforms of the leading surveillance giants \u2013 see my brief post about it @ <a href=\"https:\/\/find.news.blog\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Find News (opens in a new tab)\">Find News<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What I find\nparticularly signficant about the news is not the recommendations for public\npolicy, but rather the recognition of the free markets that there are now two\n(2) surveillance sherrifs in town \u2013 just about a decade ago, the online\nsurveillance market was completely dominated by one (1) single surveillance\nmonopoly power. That monopolist company still rules the Internet, but now at\nleast most people realize that Google is no longer the only game in town.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nonetheless,\nmost fools on the Internet <em>still<\/em> don&#8217;t understand how foolish they\nobviously are.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Innumerable\nfools \u2013 among them the billions of suckers and leading stalwart, public\ncompanies \u2013 continue to sign up and give their private data freely in exchange\nfor worthless garbage. The platforms they sign up for are a convoluted mess of\nsmoke-and-mirrors that are reminiscent of a Kafka-esque machine-in-a-box, run\nby some Dr. Seuss character ready, willing and able to sell \u201estars upon thars\u201c\nto anyone prepared to cough up a little (and in some cases a lot of) cash.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The magic\nmachinery promises to deliver results.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Western\ncivilization has been here before. The results were: The Protestant Reformation\nand The French Revolution. In case you&#8217;re having difficulty connecting the dots\n\u2013 the story doesn&#8217;t end well for the Roman Catholic Church (even though it\nstill seems like they&#8217;re doing OK today).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Another\nresult was Gutenberg&#8217;s invention of the Printing Press \u2013 yet this was probably\nat least as much a result of the humanistic attitudes developing in Renaissance\nItaly&#8230; perhaps a century (or more) earlier. Another result of the Printing\nPress (besides The Protestant Reformation) was the birth of The Scientific\nMethod, which in turn resulted in The Industrial Revolution, which led to\nfurther economic development \u2026 and finally: here we are!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Most of the\nsignificant technological development over the past 5 centuries are built upon\na strong foundation of open and transparent information. Why would any rational\nhuman being ignore this obvious fact, and instead invest their entire future in\na clandestine organization which promises better results <em>brought to you by<\/em>\na <strong>secret formula<\/strong>?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Your guess\nis as good as mine! \ud83d\ude09<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Last week Amnesty International published a report about the online platforms of the leading surveillance giants \u2013 see my brief post about it @ Find News.
