While writing the previous<\/a> episodes<\/a>, I wondered how other people would react to them. I decided to publish them even though I think most people are not very concerned about the well-being of others. I expect most people will react with something like \u201cwhat do I care what happens after I die? I only want money here + now while I’m alive\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Whether\nthat’s labeled as \u201cself-centered\u201d or \u201cegotistical\u201d, I don’t\ncare to make that judgment call \u2013 many will gladly refer to\nsomething like Adam Smith’s notion of \u201cenlightened self-interest\u201d\n(or more current might be Lily Allen’s \u201cEveryone’s at it\u201d \ud83d\ude09 ).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What\nhas become more clear to me is how people’s behavior probably masks\nsome much more deeply held beliefs (in the sense of repressed\nthoughts). People do not so much try to defy nature or evolution as\nthey try to cover up their own fears or discomfort with feeling small\nor insignificant. They do not want to go out on a limb and risk being\nlaughed out of the room.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Therefore,\nthey will not play the Holy Fool, but rather play it safe and agree\nwith the majority. The bandwagon effect capitalizes on these fears\nand insecurities to foster compliance with the proposed propaganda\nregime.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I\nam happy that I have now figured out an explanation for the observed\nmainstream compliance that does not require me to explain it with\nilliteracy. This allows me to maintain that it is at least possible<\/em>\nthat some people are not illiterate, but rather that they perhaps\nsimply choose to<\/em> make what seems to be<\/em> irrational\ndecisions for some other reason.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
